Have been rereading Door Into Fire. God I love Herewiss. And SUNSPARK. Oh Spark. (Spark/Fred OTP. <3333) (For those who don't know, Sunspark/[SPOILER] is the reason I have "bisexual interspecies polyamory" in my interests, courtesy rymenhild. And it WAS unique until slutbamwalla and lienne stole it. :P)

I do still think this is a peculiarly disjointed book for DD -- I thought something similar when I was reading Stealing the Elf King's Roses earlier in the summer (damn, I still need to finish that), and I think it's mainly that you can see DD trying to find her feet with world-building in both -- but I still love the basic storyline.

I had also forgotten how many "ahahaha what" parallels there are between this and Wheel of Time. (Well, there are patterns within the Pattern, and no way to understand them all.) Ahahaha what.

The temptation to play around with either Spark or Herewiss in mixed_muses is strong, even though I haven't read the other books in the series in forever and I'm afeared I could do neither of them justice.

Herewiss is -- are you familiar with Wheel of Time? Because he's basically Rand, only more bisexual and with less self-involvement.

And Sunspark is a fire elemental who tends to appear as either a horse or a cat and doesn't get humanity at ALL. He's basically the precursor to Fred in So You Want to Be a Wizard, only instead of high energy radiation he just burns shit up. Violently.

Ah! Then -- he's the first male in centuries to have enough of the Flame (vital power thing whatever) to use, and he's kind of on his own for figuring out how to use it because all the women who have it won't or can't teach him how to access and control it.

Also there's stuff about how Herewiss' lover Freelorn is the rightful king, but, um, honestly I am a lot more interested in the romance and the magic than the politics. *shallow*

Also, the rightful king stuff doesn't... exactly hold together so much. Have you ever tried figuring out how royal lineage passes in that series? It makes no sense at all, because DD never quite figured out how the Responsibility to bear children before marriage interacts with legitimacy of said children. This is what I mean by finding her feet with world-building. TotF -- and StEKR, for that matter -- are both trying very hard to world-build without As You Know-ing or similar, and they succeed a majority of the time. But you get the sense that the world has been built in approximately the same way the exposition is delivered: in patches.

Or it could just be DD's usual casual relationship with continuity reliant on Rule of Cool. (Oh, TV Tropes. What would I do without you?)

Fact: Segnbora was on my original, way-back-in-the-day list of "characters I might pick to play at Milliways. So was Ael t'Rllailieu.

So was Will Stanton, the one I (obviously) originally went with.

I love the Door Into Fire books so, so much. As much for its attempts as for its successes, but in many ways it's Diane Duane making herself a GIANT SANDBOX to play around with her tropes in, and given that I love her tropes... yep!

*giggles* Yeah, pretty much. And I stand by my analysis that TotF is basically practice for the YW universe. (And they are totally in the same sheaf of universes. I think one of the series actually references the other.) (I also like using it as justification for Tom and Carl being romantic partners.)
