So it's nearly 2014, and I'm actually sad to see 2013 go! This was a good year for me, overall. But I'm looking forward to 2014.

I'm also really looking forward to Yuletide reveals because I can't wait to share with everyone what I wrote! I haven't been going through the archive in any kind of organized fashion, but I've come across a couple of fics -- Yuletide and otherwise -- that I want to rec.

The Hunger Games, Young Wizards )

God, fandom, I do love you.

HELLO FRIENDS I AM HOME

GOODBYE FRIENDS I AM ASLEEP

I REREAD THE WIZARD'S DILEMMA ON THE PLANE WHICH WAS BOTH A GREAT IDEA AND A TERRIBLE ONE BECAUSE ON THE ONE HAND, I DIDN'T HAVE THE CHANCE TO INFLICT HEART-WRENCHING PAIN ON MY INTERNET FRIENDS; ON THE OTHER HAND I HAD TO KEEP MY CHOKING UP AND WIBBLING QUIET

UNRELATEDLY THE VANCOUVER AIRPORT WINS 0 POINTS FROM ME FOR EASE OF INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER, WHAT THE FUCK

You ever get an idea for a fic and go "Oh god, I can't publish that under my usual pseudonym"?
adiva_calandia: (Merry Fucking Christmas)
Ahahaha the fic I posted earlier has gotten half as many hits and almost as many kudos in the twelve hours or so it's been up as "Callahans" has gotten in the eight months its been up.

So that's why we write in popular fandoms!

The Geek's Prayer: Spirituality, comfort, and conviction in SF lit.

It sounds like an academic paper (and believe you me I have considered writing that academic paper before) but it's really just a collection of "prayers" from various SF canons I love -- Young Wizards, Time Quartet, etc.

I should really be asleep, but I have just enough writing energy going on in my head that I don't quite want to close my eyes yet.

"Callahans" got this comment today on AO3:
As a denizen of the Place in the form of alt.callahans I thank you for this slice of home.

Blah de blah talk about Callahan's Place and crossovers and stuff )

All right, I have written myself to sleep.

Moments in which I fucking love this book and am reminded how much I love the series and ghljkljklfdsa:

Nita's eyes narrowed. "One last time," she said. "Before we start dealing with you, I want to talk to Kit."

Aurilelde simply squeezed Khretef's hand, then smiled at Nita. "But you still don't understand, do you? He returned to us as soon as he was able to, some hours ago . . . and as soon as that happened, he was absorbed." She smiled up at Khretef again. "The more senior soul always has priority in any such meeting. It didn't take much doing: he was young and inexperienced, and not as wholly there as either of us are." She looked at Nita with what was perhaps meant to be kindness. "If you really want so to be with him," she said, "maybe you should consider submitting yourself to the same fate. I dare say I could fit you in somewhere."

Nita flushed with fury. But she knew what to do with that. "Don't count on it," she said.

"And why wouldn't I? Surely you can see my Khretef far exceeds the incomplete fragment you've fastened onto! He's a child of the First World, a warrior, a great wizard, greater than anything you or your poor Kit would ever have been. You two are just poor shadows. Khretef and I are the substance, the originals. And Khretef lived for me. He died for me! Whereas your little Kit seems merely to have been saved from dying for you once or twice. Sometimes even by you--"

Nita looked at Aurilelde and concentrated on holding still. "If you think you're holding some kind of moral high ground because somebody's died for you," she said, her voice shaking, "I've been there, and what you're displaying now looks nothing like it. And as for the possibility that I might want to make up any part of you --" She laughed. "That's not going to happen. So turn him loose, and then we'll talk about what happens to this planet."

 oh my fucking god

Athena!Eight is the first Cylon wizard

because she's the one who made a Choice

oh my GOD someone write me a YW/BSG crossover I'm too drunk for it right now
adiva_calandia: (iBook)
Oh my GOD. *delighted*

Diane Duane wrote fic that basically establishes Carmela as pansexual and has Filif identifying as trans. (I might say genderfluid is a better term, given that she's transitioning from male-identifying to female-identifying with the implication that she might transition back. BUT WHATEVER.)
adiva_calandia: (Merry Fucking Christmas)
HEY SO

Apparently A Wizard of Mars is finally out in the States?

Do I ask my parents to try and find a copy in New York and bring it to me, or do I try and avoid spoilers for three months, or do I say fuck it and ask someone to tell me if I called anything?

NEW CANON. GAAAAAAAAH.

A very merry Christmas to all who are celebrating it, and a warm and bright Friday to those who are not. <3

Also, happy Yuletide! I didn't write or request this year, once again -- one of these days! However, I did write a couple-three drabbles today. They all involve mistletoe.

If you would like a mistletoe drabble, name me a couple of characters and I'll see what I can do. :D

Geek thought for the day:

Obviously the Voynich Manuscript is written in the Speech, and the wizards just aren't telling anyone. I mean come on, look at it!

Although I am still at a loss for the wizardrly significance of all the naked ladies.

Okay, so. I'm in Pittsburgh. I do not have a bed, so I'm sleeping in the as-yet-empty master bedroom.

There are a billion things I should be doing, probably, and I barely know where to start. Unpacking; trying to find a bike on craigslist; trying to find a futon anywhere; trying to find someone with a car to help me transport a futon . . . Not to mention that I'm already committed to doing work for one of my advisors tomorrow, then meeting with her Thursday, then meeting with someone to discuss using their venue for a festival in October . . .

Just. I'm excited to be in Pittsburgh, I'm excited to be starting school, I'm excited to be living off-campus, but there's all this responsible adulthood to deal with, and it's just -- yesterday I was eating homemade cake in the house where I've spent every August as long as I can remember, y'know? I don't feel real qualified to be a responsible adult at the moment.

Aw, fuck, I'm getting maudlin and homesick and I've been away from my parents less than twenty-four hours. I should go get some lunch and coffee and see about unpacking some stuff, doing something productive. That'll make me feel better.

On a more cheerful note! I gave in and got the big honkin' Rihannsu anthology for the train. I didn't get that far into The Romulan Way before I fell asleep, but I did get far enough to get to the passenger list for the cruiser McCoy's on, the Vega.

And its inclusion of one H'rewiss.

OH DIANE DUANE YES.

Okay, seriously, something creepy is going on in the oceans.

Jul. 14: Huge blob of Arctic goo floats past slope communities.
Nobody knows for sure what the gunk is, but Petty Officer 1st Class Terry Hasenauer says the Coast Guard is sure what it is not.

"It's certainly biological," Hasenauer said. "It's definitely not an oil product of any kind. It has no characteristics of an oil, or a hazardous substance, for that matter.

"It's definitely, by the smell and the makeup of it, it's some sort of naturally occurring organic or otherwise marine organism." (Anchorage Daily News)

Jul. 14: Massive 20-foot shark washes up on LI shore.
A marine biologist said the shark likely died from some sort of illness. It was initially believed the animal died from injuries it sustained from being struck by propellers from a boat, however there were no puncture wounds visible on the shark, which was barely breathing.

Officials said the shark did not have any teeth left in its mouth, and despite it's large size, did not pose a threat to people in the area since it usually feasts on plankton. (WPIX)

Jul. 16: Jumbo squid invade San Diego shores, spook divers.
The carnivorous calamari, which can grow up to 100 pounds, came up from the depths last week and swarms of them roughed up unsuspecting divers. Some divers report tentacles enveloping their masks and yanking at their cameras and gear. (AP)

Seriously, no matter what the reason is -- global warming, the need for another Twelvesong, whatever -- I'm creeped out and not a little nervous. Three nearly inexplicable occurrences in the ocean on three different coasts? Ummm.

Made it safely home.

Quaxo has lost a lot of weight, but he was very happy to see me and curl up on my chest. Mom points out that part of this probably has to do with the fact that I'm the one person in the house who hasn't been responsible for dragging him to the vet lately. (He got most of his teeth pulled earlier this week, including his snaggletooth. Poor kitty.)

I dashed off a ridiculously sappy bit of Tom Robbins-inspired stuff as we flew in over Anchorage that boils down to: MOUNTAINS. ("Pittsburgh is mountainous!" said Mom. "LIKE HELL," I said. "NO SNOW ON TOP, NO MOUNTAIN.")

I also dashed off the next bit of SPN/YW! For y'all's enjoyment.

Part one.

Part two.

Part three.

Part four.

When they finally reached Madison and headed for a motel, Jo was waiting for them. )
