Dec. 29th, 2004 12:37 pmIt occurs to me that I never actually posted anything about our first Midsummer rehearsal. So here's the rundown of the best moments.
David (the director) told us, "Okay, I want to do an American Shakespeare, so for example, the Mechanicals should all come up with a lower-class accent. If that means Southern to you, go ahead. We can pull in a Brooklyn accent, whatever, as long as it's not the [english]elevated English accent.[/english] I know some of you auditioned with English accents, so . . . ." So Paul, who's playing Theseus and Oberon, starts reading the opening lines of the show -- as Colonel Sanders. "Mah fair Hippolyta. . ." And Don (Puck) tried to deliver his lines with a Chicago-gangster-Godfather accent, which had everyone falling all over the place. Oh, and Betsy delivered her fairy lines (I think she's Cobweb) as a valley girl.
Then there was Bobby playing Wall. Bottom said, "Show me thy chink, to blink through with mine eyne!" So Bobby held up the V-sign. Which amused me greatly, even if only a few other people got it. "Thanks, courteous Wall!"
I can't wait for Thursday! We'll rehearse the Lovers for an hour, then there's a two hour break for me and Betsy, and then we rehearse the Fairies. So I get to go to Noble's Diner, which is just down the street and has this great high-class diner food, like fancy mashed potatoes, and a steamed veggie dish that has parsnips and beets.
