That graphic doesn't show the bit where the span from the easternmost tip of the panhandle to the westernmost tip of the Aleutian Islands is actually about as long as the contiguous US is wide.
(Which is yet... somehow still kinda unfair, as Alaska has 10% of the population of say, Indiana, and yet gets three times that in voting power. But we're both pretty locked in, anyway. Boo.)
Okay, so, if the contiguous US is roughly the same size as Australia, and Alaska is also roughly the size of the contiguous US . . .
Well, howsabout we call it a tie. :D
(I could throw in the fact that Alaska is the northernmost, westernmost, and easternmost state in the Union, because we're so big we actually cross the international date line. But I won't.)
When I was little we totally got the BrainQuest computer game people to give us free stuff because of that tidbit. They said Maine was furthest east, which, we know, is a total lie. International dateline, anybody?
My favourite Alaska fact is that the muni is larger than Delaware. I can honestly tell people that my CITY is larger than their STATE.
