I have probably four pages for four hours of work. Okay.

Now, vignettes and notes.

A lot of narration and dialogue is adapted straight from the books.

When Kim was young, Shane would take the shape of a bat and hang in the eaves as far down the street as he could get, listening for the nabbing culls. That was the only time he got far away from her, though. The rest of the time, he stayed close to her, confusing their scents to put off the other daemons.

When the boys wrestled, Kim would give as good as she got, but Shane never got involved with the scuffles between daemons like the others did. Daemons were more perceptive than people.

He spent most of his time twined around her legs or sitting on her shoulder as a small, scruffy cat. He was always as thin as she was. Neither of them were surprised when they woke up one morning and he'd settled that way.

Kim awoke all at once. She was propped against something hard, in a semi-sitting position, and she could feel cord around her wrists and ankles. She could feel Shane nearby, and she willed him to stay as still as she was, feigning unconsciousness. After a moment, she heard a worried voice say, "'Adn't they oughter be waking?"

"They are awake," said the voice of Mairelon the Magician. "They're just pretending. Didn't you see his daemon? Come on, child, you might as well admit it. You'll have to open your eyes sooner or later."

Kim sighed and capitulated. Next to her, Shane lifted his head, rolled smoothly onto his paws and started to trot towards her as she looked over the cart and the cord around her wrists and ankles. The bloodhound daemon -- the droopy man's -- growled, and Shane stopped, hissing at her. He looked at Kim, and sat back down to groom himself, as Kim decided that the knots tying her were too complicated and strong to slip out of, and abandoned the thought of escaping while her captors' attention was elsewhere.

"Quite so," said Mairelon.

Kim looked up. Mairelon was standing next to the chest on the opposite side of the wagon. He had removed his cloak and hat; without htem, he seemed both shorter and younger than he had appeared on stage. His magpie daemon was perched on his shoulder, peering out of first one eye, then the other, at her and Shane. Their expressions held none of the anger and annoyance Kim expected; instead there was a gleam of something very like interest or amusement.

The magician reached for the rope that bound her hands. Hunch made a strangling noise, echoed in a growl by his daemon. Mairelon paused and looked at them with an expression of innocent inquiry.

"You're never letting 'im go?" Hunch said, plainly appalled by the idea. "You got no idea what 'e's up to!"

"I think the two of us can handle her."

Shane's fur puffed out; Hunch bit down hard on the right side of his mustache. "'Er?"

"Oh, you didn't realize?" Mairelon said. "I would've thought Fidella would have noticed."

". . . And this is Shay," Kim said, chucking her daemon under the chin as he twined his tail around her neck.

Lord Franton hid his surprise well, but Kim had had too many years of watching people carefully to miss it -- or the curiosity that came with it. "Shane, I mean," she explained. "When we were on the streets, I couldn't let anyone know that my daemon was male. If it didn't tip people off, they'd at least have started looking at me like you just did."

The marquis blinked, and then let out a self-deprecating laugh. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to--"

Kim blushed. "No, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to say you were--"

They both stopped, started again, stopped. Lord Franton's greyhound daemon let out an amused whuff and said, "I think that's quite clever."

Shane, to Kim's surprise, leapt off her shoulder, so that he was on the floor with Aliane, though he stayed close to Kim's skirts. "Thanks."

Aliane bent her elegant neck in acknowledgment. The marquis smiled, and Kim ducked her head, embarrassed.

"Oh," he said, "I believe the music is about to begin. But you must tell me more later."

Mairelon looked up. He frowned for a moment, as if collecting his thoughts from somewhere very far away, and then said, "Ah, Kim! Come in and toast your good fortune." His voice had an unfamiliar, almost mocking edge to it, and as Kim watched, Gwyneth fluttered from his shoulder to the table and stumbled as she landed.

"My good fortune?" Kim stepped into the room. Shane leapt up onto the table, stalking up to Gwyneth. She pecked vaguely at him, then let out a raucous caw of laughter and flapped her wings clumsily.

"You're foxed," Shane said, mildly surprised. Gwyneth laughed again.

"We're not foxed yet," Mairelon objected. "The decanter isn't empty."

I always liked that DC used the root "shay" for a name. :-)

Ma Yanger's daemon could be a raven?

Dan Laverham... Hm. A chameleon, or maybe a snake? Because he's changeable and sheds his skin?
