All these consequences are contained in this characteristic, that the worker is related to the product of labour as to an alien object. For it is clear that, according to this premise, the more the worker exerts himself in his work, the more powerful the alien, objective world becomes which he brings into being over against himself, the poorer he and his inner world become, and the less they belong to him.
-Karl Marx, "Estranged Labour"
It is so tempting to just stop reading there, and go in tomorrow and make big puppyeyes and say "But if I exerted myself more in my homework, my inner world would be poorer!"

*hums*

Yeah, it's hard for me to take Marx seriously when I'm reading him, becaus it's like, "OMGWTFKARLMARX." He's EPIC. And he writes EPIC lines like "The only wheels which political economy sets in motion are greed, and the war of the avaricious -- Competition." And all I can do is go "Oh, Marx."
