LATER...
In explanation of my last post:
Later in the year, West will be doing Beauty & the Beast. Bettyrae, the musical theatre director, is notorious for playing favorites. However, Cody, a newbie, an unknown, got the Dentist in Little Shop of Horros. If you're not familiar with the show, this is a FRICKING GOOD PART. He's inspired me to try out for B&tB. After all, if he can do it, why can't I?
I'll tell you why I can't -- I've never had voice training, I'm a sophomore, I'm an unknown, and if Bettyrae wants pretty girls with good singing voices, she's already got a truckload at West. My chances of unseating Annika or Denya from the Leading Lady post are about as good as Nader winning the election (I would say as good as the Red Sox winning the series, but. . . *grin* Go Sox!).
(Speaking of the Sox and the election, I understand some political analyst said "Kerry will win the election when the Red Sox win the pennant." Cue rejoicing. GO VOTE! I'm can't yet, so you guys have to do it for me. Hey, then I'm getting multiple votes! Score! *grin* It occurred to me this morning that some people still like Bush. This surprises me, for some reason. Everywhere I look, I see anti-Bush bumper stickers, LJ posts, conversations taking place -- how can there still be people who like him? But they exist, in large numbers, I fear. It just strikes me as weird, for some reason.)
Anyway, back to the theatre discussion. What annoys me is that I have a pretty impressive resume, though I say so myself, and yet my chances of getting a good part are slim to none. What the heck? How many of Bettyrae's favorites have been cast in a proffessional touring show?
Okay, now I'm getting bratty, and that scares me. This part honestly doesn't mean so much to me that if I do't get it, the sky will fall. But such unwillingness to cast anyone else really ticks me off. The problem is, I will never get away from it. ATY practiced it -- You always knew that Todd was gonna get the best part. I always knew I was going to get a spear-carrier. Notice that the one time I got a good part was in a play the Mitchells did not direct. When ATY and TFYP split up, I finally started getting the benefits of seniority -- but that concerns me. One should never be able to predict every role and be right 90% of the time. When you can, something is severly wrong with the directors.
Directors who do this:
~Bettyrae
~Block
~Christian (to whom I owe success)
~Yngvil
~The Mitchells
That covers almost all the youth theatre in town. Now, in the adult theatre, like Cyrano's, you see regulars, like Forrest or Paul or Christa, but they don't always have lead parts. This is probably due to the fact that ECT hires different directors to do each show.
Anyway, I'm going to try out for B&tB, to see what I get. This brings up more ethical questions for me. If I try out and get a horrible part, should I go through with the show? I really don't want to give Bettyrae a bad impression by dropping out before the first rehearsal. Or what if I get a good part, but can't do the show? That's a little easier -- I have previous obligations, and I can't do a thing about it.
Okay, done. Last comment -- HORMONES SUCK. Go vote and get Bush out of office. Peace.
