So I'm reading entries from the Newgate Calendar for PPP. (The Newgate Calendar, for those who don't know, is a collection of summaries of criminal cases brought to Newgate Prison from the late 1600s to the early 1800s. Pickpockets, thieves, prostitutes, murderers -- you name it, there's probably a story about someone who did it.)
This woman? Kind of amazing. Not only did she rob people with incredible ingenuity, when she was transported to America (for the first time), she just shipped all her stolen goods ahead of her and lived like a queen for a little while.
It's a crazy collection of documents, really. We noted in class that a lot of the criminals are specified as Scotch or Irish; the women usually repent and are still hanged, or plead pregnancy and . . . are still hanged (er); the writers are totally into how cool the criminals are.
And I'm maybe taking notes on stuff for Kim to a) have tried, b) have heard of someone trying, c) be terrified of, or d) hear about her mates doing, years later.
Dude, why do you think I wanted so badly to be in this course? *grin* Besides the fact that one of our textbooks is titled Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash, I mean.
