*facepalms, giggling* I am so bad at phones. Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] moondog.

Having finished My Enemy, My Ally (*HEARTCLUTCH* Oh Jim. Oh Ael. Oh book.) I've moved on to the other ST:TOS novel I picked up for the trip -- Uhura's Song, by Janet Kagan.

So far, I like it! The style struck me as a little dry at first, but I think I'd just been spoiled by Diane Duane. Kagan is doing some fun things with building an alien culture, and there's a cool treasure-hunt-via-songs plot element that reminds me of Pearls of Lutra, which was always my favorite Redwall book. *cough*

Anyway, what I find totally hilarious about this book is that in a way, it's a fourteen-year-old girl's fanfic. The aliens are CATS!!! And there is SUCH A CANON SUE. She's Bones' best friend and replacement! She's tiny but beautiful! She beats Sulu at fencing! Kirk is in lust with her! She's so good at first contact with an alien species that Spock is disapproving!

And Uhura's Best Friend is DYING TRAGICALLY and it is a RACE AGAINST TIME and just. If I'd been into ST:TOS when I was fourteen, I would have written this book, but it wouldn't have been as good.

Oh, Kagan also has Chekov speaking in a slightly Funetik Aksent ("Sair! Thet would be rude -- Mr. Spock is a Wulcan!") which I appreciate on the grounds that I might be Chekov for Halloween. >.>
