Gentle reader . . .
Dec. 22nd, 2007 11:57 pmI just sent the following e-mail (I guess it really should've been a letter, but what can you do):
ETA: *snickerfits* I cc'ed my mom, sister, and dad on that; Mom just came into my room grinning and asked, delighted, "Did you actually send that?"
We are SUCH GEEKS.
ETA2: Unrelated -- what the hell, ship me.
Even more unrelated -- there's a moment in Small Gods that never ceases to amaze me. It's the moment where I realize that I am deeply angry at the unfairness of Vorbis claiming he lead Brutha through the desert. Like. Seriously That is NOT FAIR thoughts. It's crazy.
*hugs this book so much*
Dear Miss Manners:I asked Miss Manners a question! I feel like I'm brushing greatness, even if she doesn't respond.
First, let me say that I have read your books and column since I was very young; my parents, sister, and I often ask each other, in the face of a social situation, "Well, what would Miss Manners say?" So when something truly baffling happened to me at a Christmas party tonight (the minefields of the etiquette world), you were the first person we thought to ask.
As a group of us were getting ready to leave to go caroling, an older woman asked me to help her with her boots. I obliged; she thanked me; I told her, "No problem." "How old are you?" she asked. I told her that I'm 19, and she immediately said, "You mean 'you're welcome!'" Startled, I said, "You're welcome." She asked if I'd ever heard that objection from "other oldsters," and started to explain -- I think -- that plenty of things are problems, but we were interrupted before she could finish, leaving me very confused about what exactly had just happened.
Did I commit a faux pas with my automatic response? Is "No problem" ungracious? Do I need to change my habits? I know teenagers of my generation have a reputation for uncouthness, and I do like doing my part to dispel that notion.
Thank you -- for taking the time to read this, and for the many years of entertainment and education -- and may you have a joyous season and new year.
Sincerely,
[Adiva]
