Two things:
1. Job interview tomorrow morning!
2. A hypothetical question. Okay, I have very mixed feelings about Avatar. On the one hand: pretty; on the other hand: derivative writing. On the one hand: Zoe Saldana is fantastic and Neytiri kicks everyone's ass; on the other hand: Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver both die while Joel Moore got to live. On the one hand: unabashed criticism of American foreign policy, and making the heroes of the piece essentially insurgents; on the other hand: White Messiah.
That last bit is what I want to discuss. To wit -- If Jake Sully were played by one of these guys, would it still be as problematic? I mean, my instinct is that yes, it would be, because the central story would still be "American Guy from technologically advanced culture comes in and is The Best Na'vi Ever." But I'd still kind of like to see what implications the story would have with a protagonist of color.
Or, you know, maybe I just really want to see Naveen Andrews as a ten foot tall blue catperson. That could be playing a factor. >.>
(Tell me it would be a waste of time to photoshop Na'vi versions of all those actors?)
Bonus question! What if Jake Sully had been Jane Sully? What would that have done for the story? What if Jane Sully had been played by Michelle Rodriguez and Sam Worthington had played the helicopter pilot?
